Download FAQ
How can I download 2nd generation lidar data?
The 2nd generation lidar data is provided in modern formats, primarily intended for direct access through the desktop GIS software. For the best experience, users should import the COG layer, either by adding the item directly from the COG link available in the STAC Browser, or connecting to the STAC catalog within GIS software. To download portions of the data to your local environment, please clip the data within GIS software to the necessary study extent.
Guidance for accessing 2nd generation lidar products, including the STAC browser, COGs, VRTs, and image services, is available on the Data Access page.
MnGeo does not offer point cloud layers through the STAC catalog, but links to the USGS 3DEP Point Cloud LAZ files are provided through the download widget for 2nd generation and 1st generation lidar collections. For bulk downloads, we recommend using the uGet Download Manager. Instructions for uGet Download Manager are available from USGS.
How do I clip data to a study extent?
To clip lidar data in ArcGIS Pro, please review the Esri documentation for the Clip Raster tool. For the best experience, it is recommended to clip by a simple bounding box rather than a complex boundary.
To clip lidar data in QGIS, please review the QGIS documentation regarding raster extraction.
How do I download 2nd generation lidar data from USGS?
The USGS National Map is a tool for viewing and downloading a variety of national data products, including elevation products.
The MnTopo web application may also provide links directly to downloadable LAZ files available through USGS as part of the MnTopo download tool.
How can I download 1st generation lidar data?
1st generation lidar data and related products are still available for users to access and download. Through the MnTopo download widget, links are provided to 1st generation lidar tile file geodatabases and LAZ files. The download widget will provide a text file including links to all tiles that overlap the user-defined polygon. Links to LAZ files provided by USGS are also included, if available. For bulk downloads, we recommend using the uGet Download Manager. Instructions for uGet Download Manager are available from USGS.
